LAHORE: At least 12 people were killed and 1,388 others injured in 1,222 road traffic crashes (RTCs) reported across Punjab during the last 24 hours, according to the Emergency Services Department (ESD).
Rescue teams responded to accidents in all 37 districts of the province. Of the injured, 553 victims with serious injuries were shifted to hospitals, while 835 people with minor injuries were treated on the spot by Rescue Medical Teams, helping to reduce the burden on healthcare facilities.
Official data shows that motorcycles were involved in 73 per cent of the crashes, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, helmet use, and lane discipline to curb the rising number of accidents.
The analysis further revealed that the victims included 809 drivers, 46 underage drivers, 16 pedestrians, and 431 passengers.
In terms of district-wise data, Lahore topped the list with 222 crashes affecting 258 people, followed by Gujranwala, which reported 80 RTCs with 83 victims, and Faisalabad, where 76 crashes injured 88 people.
Demographic details indicate that a total of 1,400 victims were affected, including 1,144 males and 256 females. Among them, 212 victims were under 18 years of age, 814 were between 18 and 40 years, while 374 were above 40 years.
The data also shows that 1,255 motorcycles, 80 auto-rickshaws, 183 cars, 29 vans, 20 passenger buses, 26 trucks, and 128 other vehicles and slow-moving carts were involved in the reported accidents.
