Islamabad – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a new policy regarding inactive mobile SIM cards, warning users that numbers showing no activity for 180 consecutive days will be permanently blocked and reassigned to new customers.
According to the official notification, any SIM card that remains unused for six months – with no outgoing or incoming calls, text messages, or internet usage – will be automatically deactivated by mobile network operators.
The telecom regulator stated that once a SIM is blocked due to inactivity, the associated phone number will be returned to the operator’s pool and may be issued to another subscriber. This policy aims to optimize the utilization of mobile number resources and ensure efficient distribution of telecommunications services across the country.
Industry experts suggest that this measure will help address the shortage of available phone numbers and reduce the burden of maintaining dormant connections on network systems. The policy also aligns with international practices adopted by telecom regulators worldwide.
Mobile phone users are advised to maintain regular activity on their SIM cards to avoid disconnection. Even minimal usage such as making a brief call, sending a text message, or using mobile data will keep the number active.
The PTA has urged subscribers with multiple SIM cards to ensure they remain active if they wish to retain their numbers. Network operators are expected to begin implementing this policy immediately, with automated systems monitoring SIM activity across all service providers in Pakistan.
