WASHINGTON (AFP, Reuters) A severe snowstorm has paralyzed life in the United States, with 30 people killed in various incidents due to snowfall.
Severe snowfall and rain continue with cold winds in dozens of states including Washington, New York, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Jersey. Due to the snowstorm, 19,000 flights have been cancelled across America, and federal offices in Washington are closed.
More than a foot of snow has fallen from Arkansas to New England, and roads and educational institutions have been closed due to severe weather. Snowfall of up to 20 inches was recorded in northern Pittsburgh areas, while temperatures dropped to minus 31 degrees. Some areas experienced the most severe cold in decades.
Eight bodies have been found in open locations in New York City. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said 5 people were found dead in freezing temperatures over the weekend.
In Texas, authorities confirmed 3 deaths including a 16-year-old girl who died in a sledding accident. In Louisiana, 2 people died from hypothermia.
More than 1 million people are without electricity due to rain and snowstorms. Extreme cold warnings have been issued for approximately 200 million people in 44 states. Emergency has been declared in 24 states.
The meteorological department has warned that more severe cold and possibly another snowstorm could affect the eastern coastal areas in the coming days. The US National Weather Service has told Americans that such weather will continue for the next few days.
