Karachi: A major theft involving medicines worth millions of rupees has been uncovered at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi’s largest government-run hospital, leading to the registration of a criminal case against the accused.
According to hospital sources, a member of the emergency department staff was caught attempting to steal a large quantity of medicines by loading them into a vehicle. Security guards grew suspicious of the activity and intercepted the suspect, who was then taken to the hospital’s security post.
Following a formal complaint by the hospital administration, an FIR was registered against the individuals involved.
Hospital authorities believe that the theft of medicines at JPMC may have been ongoing for some time. The value of the medicines recovered in the latest incident has been estimated at approximately PKR 1.5 million.
The incident has raised serious concerns about internal controls and security at one of Pakistan’s busiest public hospitals, prompting calls for stricter monitoring to prevent the misuse of essential medical supplies meant for patients.
