MOSCOW/KYIV — Russia on Wednesday claimed to have seized control of two villages near Dobropillia, a former coal mining town in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, in what could mark the most significant territorial gain in the area since the start of its full-scale invasion in 2022.
The Russian Defence Ministry did not name the villages but said the advances were part of ongoing operations aimed at pushing Ukrainian forces further west. Kyiv has not yet confirmed the loss of territory but acknowledged “intense fighting” in the Donetsk sector.
Military analysts say the development, if verified, could open a new axis of pressure on Ukrainian positions and threaten supply lines in the industrial heartland, which has been a focal point of the conflict for more than two years.
