The Indian government has unveiled a record budget for the financial year 2026-27, allocating $133 billion (approximately ₹12.2 lakh crore) for infrastructure and $85 billion (approximately ₹7.85 lakh crore) for defence. This represents an increase of around 9% in infrastructure spending and 15% in defence expenditure compared to the previous year.
Presenting the Union Budget in Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that these historic allocations aim to accelerate India’s journey toward becoming a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) while balancing growth with inclusion.
Infrastructure (Capital Expenditure): ₹12.2 lakh crore ($133 billion) — up by about 9-11% from last year’s ₹11.1-11.2 lakh crore. Focus areas include roads, railways, ports, seven new high-speed rail corridors, national waterways, and development in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
Defence Budget: Total ₹7.85 lakh crore — a 15% rise from ₹6.81 lakh crore last year. Of this, capital outlay for modernisation stands at ₹2.19 lakh crore (up ~22%), earmarked for next-generation fighter aircraft, drones, ships/submarines, smart weapons, and boosting indigenous production under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The sharp defence hike follows the four-day conflict with Pakistan in May 2026 (Operation Sindoor), which involved heavy use of drones, missiles, and artillery.
The government emphasized that these investments will strengthen economic growth, national security, and self-reliance. Additional incentives were also announced for manufacturing, AI, semiconductors, rare-earth elements, and other strategic sectors.
