LAHORE, Pakistan — A magistrate handed down an additional sentence to the individual convicted in the attack on former Prime Minister Imran Khan, imposing four years’ simple imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 40,000.
The convict was found guilty under the Punjab Arms (Amendment) Ordinance 2015, according to court officials.
The sentencing adds to previous penalties imposed on the attacker, who was involved in the November 2022 incident during a political rally in Wazirabad, Punjab, where Khan was shot and wounded in the leg.
The attack on Khan, who was leading a long march to Islamabad at the time, drew widespread condemnation and raised questions about security arrangements for political leaders.
Several people were injured in the incident when gunfire erupted during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party’s rally convoy.
Khan has alleged the attack was politically motivated, though investigations into the full circumstances surrounding the incident have been ongoing.
The Punjab Arms Ordinance provides for penalties related to illegal possession and use of firearms, with courts empowered to impose imprisonment and fines on those found guilty.
Details about whether the convict faces additional charges or if further legal proceedings are pending were not immediately available.
The case has been closely watched given the high-profile nature of the victim and ongoing political tensions in Pakistan.
