LAHORE, Pakistan — Aleema Khan, sister of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, said the sky will be filled with kites bearing images of her brother on Basant day, the traditional kite-flying festival.
“It seems the judges have given up. I know they have to hand down the sentence,” Aleema Khan said, referring to ongoing legal proceedings against the PTI founder.
Her remarks came as Imran Khan faces multiple cases in various courts, with his party maintaining that the charges are politically motivated.
Basant is a traditional spring festival celebrated in Punjab, particularly in Lahore, where kite-flying competitions draw large crowds. The festival has been officially banned in recent years due to safety concerns related to the use of sharp kite strings that have caused fatalities.
Aleema Khan’s statement appeared to be both a reference to the popular festival and a symbolic gesture of defiance and support for her brother, who has been in detention since August 2023.
The PTI founder has been convicted in several cases and faces numerous other charges ranging from corruption to inciting violence, all of which he and his party deny.
PTI supporters have frequently used various symbolic gestures and campaigns to demonstrate support for their incarcerated leader.
Aleema Khan has been vocal in her criticism of what she describes as a biased judicial process against her brother.
