RAJANPUR, Pakistan — Punjab Chief Minister inaugurated the Green Electric Bus project in Rajanpur district, announcing that 1,500 additional buses are coming to Punjab and every district will have green buses within one year.
“Within one year, green buses will run in every district of Punjab,” the chief minister said during the inauguration ceremony.
The chief minister said that 15 buses have arrived in Rajanpur initially, with more buses expected to follow.
“Right now 15 buses have come to Rajanpur, but more buses will arrive,” the chief minister said in an address at the event.
The Green Electric Bus project is part of Punjab’s broader initiative to modernize public transportation and reduce carbon emissions through the introduction of environment-friendly vehicles.
Electric buses are seen as a key component in addressing air pollution in Pakistani cities, which rank among the most polluted globally, while also providing affordable public transport to residents.
The expansion of green buses to districts beyond major urban centers like Lahore represents an effort to improve public transportation infrastructure across the province.
Punjab government officials have emphasized that the electric bus initiative aligns with sustainable development goals and will help reduce the province’s carbon footprint while improving mobility for citizens.
The project is expected to create employment opportunities in operations, maintenance, and charging infrastructure development.
Details about the cost of the project, the source of buses, and charging infrastructure plans were not immediately provided.
