Lahore, February 7, 2026 – The first day of the revived Basant kite-flying festival in Lahore turned tragic as kite-related accidents claimed two lives and left approximately 40 people injured, according to Mayo Hospital administration.
Most injuries were caused by sharp or chemical-coated kite strings (deadly “dor”) cutting necks and faces, electrocution while retrieving kites from power lines, falls from rooftops, and other kite-flying mishaps. Victims included children and young adults; the majority received first aid and were discharged after treatment.
The Punjab Health Department has kept all hospitals on high alert throughout the three-day festival. Rescue 1122 teams remain active, though several violations of safety protocols — including banned metallic strings and inadequate safety measures — were reported despite government restrictions.
Basant returned to Lahore in 2026 after an 18-year ban, originally imposed due to recurring deaths and injuries. Safety measures such as mandatory safety rods on motorcycles and prohibition of dangerous strings were enforced, but the opening day saw multiple breaches.
Meanwhile, following a devastating suicide bombing at an Imambargah in Islamabad that killed dozens, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz cancelled all her official Basant engagements. In a statement on X, she confirmed the cancellation of the grand mega Basant show scheduled at Liberty Square. Public spaces like Liberty Chowk feature large kite models and festive setups, and the Lahore Press Club is hosting related events, but government-led celebrations have been halted in solidarity with the victims.
The festival continues into its second day with citizens flying kites amid heightened caution. Authorities urge strict adherence to safety rules to prevent further casualties.
