LAHORE, Pakistan: The Punjab government has intensified province-wide measures to curb artificial price hikes and strengthen security arrangements ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, officials said on Wednesday.
The steps are being implemented under the Rs47 billion ($—) Ramadan Nigehban Package, launched on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to provide financial relief to low-income families.
The measures were reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman, where officials discussed price control mechanisms, security planning, and the rollout of the relief package.
According to officials, 4.2 million eligible families will receive Rs10,000 each through payment cards under the scheme. So far, 1.2 million cards have been dispatched to districts, with distribution expected to be completed by March 1. District administrations have been directed to ensure doorstep delivery of the cards to beneficiaries.
The Chief Secretary instructed deputy commissioners across the province to strictly enforce officially notified prices during Ramadan, intensify action against profiteers and hoarders, and personally supervise auction processes in wholesale markets. Ensuring the availability of essential commodities at controlled rates and maintaining a balance between supply and demand were described as key responsibilities of district authorities.
Price control magistrates have been directed to remain active in the field, particularly to prevent shortages of fruits and vegetables. District administrations were also asked to facilitate organizers of community iftar meals.
On security arrangements, authorities were instructed to prepare comprehensive security plans for mosques and imambargahs. Measures include enhanced CCTV surveillance and the installation of walk-through gates at sensitive locations.
Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Karim told the meeting that all Safe Cities Authority cameras would remain fully operational, while police patrolling and security deployment would be increased during iftar and Taraweeh prayers.
Officials further said that Ramadan bazaars would become operational in Sahulat bazaars across the province from February 14, offering flour, fruits and vegetables at subsidized rates.
The meeting was attended by senior provincial officials, while divisional commissioners, regional police officers, deputy commissioners and district police officers joined virtually.
