The School of Communication Studies at the University of the Punjab commemorated World Radio Day with a ceremony at its campus radio station, FM 104.6, highlighting the continued relevance of radio as a mass communication medium.
The event was attended by Director School of Communication Studies Prof Dr Abida Ashraf, Program Manager FM 104.6 Muhammad Irshad Chaudhry, faculty members and students.
Addressing participants, Prof. Dr. Abida Ashraf emphasized radio’s enduring importance as an accessible and cost-effective platform capable of reaching remote communities where other forms of media may have limited access. She noted that while younger audiences often gravitate toward digital platforms, radio remains a powerful tool for education, dialogue and social cohesion.
She underscored the role of radio in promoting peace, harmony and mutual understanding, and commended the organizers for arranging the commemorative event.
Speaking on the occasion, Muhammad Irshad Chaudhry said communication plays a critical role in the contemporary era, including in the context of information and narrative-building in modern conflicts. He added that hundreds of students trained at PU Radio FM 104.6 are now serving in Pakistan’s media industry and abroad.
The ceremony concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the role of radio in education, public awareness and national development.
