Smethwick, Birmingham —
A murder investigation has been launched in the West Midlands after an 18-year-old British Pakistani teenager was fatally stabbed outside a mosque in Smethwick, near Birmingham, on Friday night.
Zeshan Afzal was found with serious injuries outside the Jamia Masjid mosque on Oldbury Road and later died. Two other men, aged 19 and 22, were taken to hospital, though their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The attack occurred in the mosque’s car park just before 9pm, as worshippers were leaving after Taraweeh prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. A heavy emergency response was deployed at the scene, including multiple ambulances, a paramedic officer, and the Air Ambulance with Critical Care Paramedics.
Worshippers inside were instructed by police to “go back inside the mosque” as the incident unfolded. The area was cordoned off, with forensics officers erecting a blue tent in the car park on Saturday morning.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson stated: “At this stage the incident is not being treated as religiously or racially aggravated, but we’re working to establish the full circumstances and who was involved.”
Detectives confirmed the investigation remains at an early stage. CCTV footage is being examined, forensic teams are conducting detailed searches, and officers are carrying out door-to-door enquiries. (Coventry Live) Police have urged anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage to come forward. No arrests have been made so far.
The local community has been left in shock, with increased police presence deployed around the mosque and surrounding streets.
