ABU DHABI / ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani national has lost his life after being struck by debris from an Iranian ballistic missile intercepted over Abu Dhabi, in what marks one of the most direct civilian casualties linked to the rapidly escalating conflict in the Middle East.
UAE authorities confirmed that their air defence systems successfully intercepted multiple ballistic missiles fired by Iran. However, fragments from the destroyed missiles fell on a residential or public area in Abu Dhabi, fatally wounding a foreign national. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Gulf News and local media subsequently identified the deceased as a Pakistani citizen. His name and age have not yet been officially disclosed, and his remains are expected to be repatriated to Pakistan following completion of legal formalities.
The attack was carried out by Iran in retaliation for military strikes launched by the United States and Israel on Iranian military and sensitive installations, in which more than 70 people were killed, including 51 schoolgirls who were attending classes at the time of the attack. Iran has since begun targeting American military bases and interests across the Arab world, with the UAE strike being part of that retaliatory campaign.
The Pakistani Embassy in Abu Dhabi has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
