GENEVA / TEHRAN — The World Health Organization has verified 13 attacks on healthcare facilities in Iran and one in Lebanon during the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced at a press conference Thursday.
A WHO official at the same briefing added that four ambulances were also affected, and that hospitals and other health sites sustained minor damage due to nearby strikes.
According to the Iranian Red Crescent chief, Israeli-US strikes have hit 3,090 homes, 528 commercial centres, 13 medical facilities, and nine Red Crescent centres. Major hospitals including Khatam Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, and various rehabilitation and welfare centres have been damaged.
Iranian authorities reported that some patients were injured when hospital structures collapsed during strikes, while facilities like Valiasr Burn Hospital had been rendered inoperable.
The WHO chief stressed that health facilities are protected under international humanitarian law, and that all efforts must be taken to prevent medical centres from being caught up in armed conflict.
The overall death toll stands at approximately 1,332 in Iran, at least 11 in Israel, six US soldiers, and nine in Gulf states, according to preliminary figures.
The conflict began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated joint strikes on Iran in operations codenamed “Operation Roaring Lion” by Israel and “Operation Epic Fury” by the United States.Iran has since launched retaliatory strikes across the broader region.
The Iranian Red Crescent has submitted documentation of the damage to the International Committee of the Red Cross and other international bodies for potential legal proceedings.
