Islamabad, Pakistan – Renowned Islamic scholar Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman has criticized Pakistan’s leadership for failing to maintain strategic oil reserves amid global uncertainties, stating that wise rulers would have stockpiled at least a year’s worth of fuel. In a pointed remark, he highlighted the need for proactive measures, drawing parallels with China’s approach to energy security.
“May Allah Almighty bestow upon our rulers wisdom, knowledge, intellect, and insight. We can only pray,” Mufti Muneeb said in a statement issued on Friday. He emphasized that the government should have ensured a one-year stock of petrol and diesel specifically for the army’s requirements, similar to how China maintains extensive reserves to safeguard against disruptions.
The scholar’s comments come at a time when Pakistan is grappling with soaring petroleum prices, which recently hit record highs in the region at 1.15 USD per liter for petrol. This surge follows a significant 55-rupee per liter increase on March 6, 2026, amid international tensions affecting global oil supplies. Mufti Muneeb argued that such foresight could mitigate economic vulnerabilities and protect national interests during crises.
Experts echo his concerns, noting that inadequate reserves expose the country to supply chain risks, especially with ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East. Pakistan’s reliance on imported oil has long been a point of contention, with calls for diversification and stockpiling gaining traction.
Government officials have yet to respond directly to the statement, but recent meetings chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif focused on economic stability and energy management. The Ministry of Petroleum assured that current stocks are sufficient for immediate needs, though long-term strategies remain under discussion.
Mufti Muneeb, a prominent figure in Pakistan’s religious and educational spheres, often comments on socio-political issues, urging ethical governance. His latest remarks have sparked discussions on social media, with many supporting the call for better preparedness.
As global energy markets remain volatile, analysts warn that without strategic reserves, nations like Pakistan could face severe shortages. International observers are monitoring how South Asian countries navigate these challenges.
