GILGIT, Pakistan — The Karakoram Highway (KKH), the vital artery connecting Gilgit and Rawalpindi, has been closed at multiple points following severe landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in Upper and Lower Kohistan, the Gilgit-Baltistan Police announced.
In an emergency public advisory, authorities confirmed that teams from the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) are on standby and will commence clearance operations at first light, subject to improvement in weather conditions. However, the timeline for reopening the highway remains uncertain.
Police have issued a strong advisory urging bus and taxi operators, transport associations, and all travelers to immediately postpone any planned travel from Gilgit-Baltistan toward Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Officials warned that passengers stranded in the remote areas of Kohistan would face significant difficulties, as swift relief and rescue operations cannot be guaranteed under current conditions.
Authorities have called on all citizens to avoid non-essential travel and to stay updated through official Gilgit-Baltistan Police communications until the situation normalizes.
