Karachi — Pakistan’s metropolitan city of Karachi was struck by devastating torrential rains, claiming 22 lives and causing widespread destruction across the city. Victims lost their lives due to electrocution, roof and wall collapses, and flash flooding, according to rescue officials.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh weather alert, warning that another spell of heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds and hailstorms, is expected to hit the city today, raising fears of further casualties and urban flooding.
Low-lying areas of the city have been submerged, with major roads rendered impassable and traffic brought to a standstill. Reports of fallen electricity poles, uprooted trees, and damaged infrastructure have been pouring in from multiple districts.
Rescue teams and emergency services have been deployed across affected neighbourhoods, though relief operations remain hampered by the scale of destruction and resource constraints.
Authorities have urged citizens to:
Avoid all unnecessary outdoor movement
Stay away from open electric wires and poles
Evacuate low-lying and flood-prone areas immediately
Contact emergency services at 1122 or 115 in case of emergency
The tragic loss of life has once again highlighted Karachi’s chronic vulnerability to monsoon and pre-season rains, with experts calling for urgent investment in the city’s crumbling drainage and urban infrastructure.
