New Delhi/Islamabad, March 25, 2026 — Pakistan’s offer to host talks between the United States and Iran has sent shockwaves through Indian political circles, prompting sharp criticism from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of turning India’s foreign policy into a “universal joke.”
Rahul Gandhi stated:
“Narendra Modi has made a mockery of Indian foreign policy. Our foreign policy is actually Modi’s personal foreign policy. You can see the results — it has become a universal joke. Everybody considers it a universal joke. He will do whatever America and Israel tell him to do.”
Indian media outlets have themselves acknowledged that “India’s narrative of regional dominance stands shattered” and that “India has been left isolated” as Pakistan emerges as a key diplomatic player.
The development marks a major setback to Modi’s long-standing policy of isolating Pakistan on the global stage. Analysts say Pakistan’s strong ties with relevant stakeholders and its credible voice in the Muslim world have positioned it effectively to facilitate meaningful dialogue, while India finds itself sidelined.
Congress leaders described it as a “severe rebuff to India.” One senior Congress figure remarked that “Modi’s foreign policy now appears compromised and driven by personal rather than national interests.”
The statements come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, where Pakistan has conveyed US messages to Iran and offered to host negotiations in Islamabad, earning international appreciation including from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
