French-Palestinian Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan has hit back at authorities pursuing legal action against her, accusing them of politically motivated “judicial harassment.” Speaking alongside her lawyer at a press conference, she stated: “I am being targeted simply because of my political views.”
The 33-year-old La France Insoumise (LFI) politician was held for several hours earlier this week and questioned again on Friday. She faces trial on July 7 on charges of “incitement to terrorism” over a social media post referencing a Japanese militant involved in a 1972 attack in Tel Aviv. A separate Paris court summons, related to additional charges including glorification of a crime, requires her appearance on September 16.
LFI coordinator Manuel Bompard condemned the proceedings as “judicial injustice,” while Interior Minister Laurent Nunez firmly rejected claims of political targeting, noting the case was initiated following complaints lodged by several Jewish organisations. “There is no persecution happening here,” he said.
Hassan, born in a refugee camp near Aleppo, Syria, became the first French-Palestinian member of the European Parliament following her 2024 election and is widely recognised as a prominent advocate for Palestinian rights.
