Washington: The ongoing tensions with Iran have created a clear divide in global politics, with differences emerging even within the United States and European countries expressing reservations about military actions. Various nations are calling for diplomatic solutions, while military preparations continue in the region. Concerns over energy supplies, security, and economic impacts are rising globally, prompting governments to work on emergency strategies.
In the US Congress, political divisions over the war with Iran have intensified. A Democratic lawmaker has announced plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Arizona), the first Iranian-American Democrat in Congress, stated on Monday that she will file the articles next week. She accused Hegseth of repeatedly violating his oath of office and the Constitution by enabling an “illegal war” against Iran.
“Only Congress has the power to declare war, not a rogue president or his lackeys,” Ansari said in a statement. She cited Hegseth’s alleged “reckless endangerment of US servicemembers” and “repeated war crimes,” including the bombing of a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, and the targeting of civilian infrastructure.
This is the second such effort; a previous one was introduced late last year by another Democrat. While the move is unlikely to succeed in the Republican-led House, it highlights deep partisan rifts in Washington over the conduct of the war, lack of congressional consultation, potential national security risks, and civilian casualties.
Background of the Conflict
The US-Iran conflict escalated in late February 2026 with joint US-Israeli strikes under Operation Epic Fury, targeting Iranian military sites, missile defenses, and leadership. Reports indicate significant civilian casualties, including from strikes near civilian areas. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks, and the Strait of Hormuz remains largely blocked, disrupting global oil supplies and driving up energy prices.
President Trump has issued ultimatums to Iran to reopen the Strait, threatening widespread destruction of power plants, bridges, and infrastructure if demands are not met. Iran has rejected temporary ceasefire proposals and called for a permanent end to hostilities.
European allies have voiced concerns over military escalation and emphasized diplomacy. The situation continues to raise fears of broader regional instability and global economic repercussions. Further congressional hearings and investigations are expected as the debate over war powers and accountability intensifies.
