KAMPALA — In a bizarre and unprecedented diplomatic outburst, Uganda’s Army Commander General Muhoozi Kainerugaba — son of President Yoweri Museveni — has demanded that Turkey hand over one billion dollars and what he described as the country’s “most beautiful bride,” warning that failure to comply would result in the closure of Turkey’s embassy in Uganda.
The general made the startling claims in a series of posts on social media, doubling down with an explicit threat against Turkish diplomatic presence in the East African nation.
“If Turkey does not meet my demands, I will ensure their embassy is shut down,” Kainerugaba wrote, in remarks that have since gone viral and drawn widespread ridicule and concern across diplomatic circles.
This is far from the first time the flamboyant general has courted controversy. Kainerugaba has a well-documented history of provocative and erratic social media statements, previously making inflammatory remarks about neighboring countries and regional geopolitics — often to the embarrassment of the Ugandan government.
Ankara has yet to issue an official response to the demands. However, diplomatic analysts have dismissed the remarks as deeply unserious, warning nonetheless that such statements risk straining Uganda–Turkey relations, which have in recent years seen growing economic and military cooperation.
The incident has once again cast a spotlight on the outsized and often unpredictable public profile of the man widely seen as Uganda’s president-in-waiting.
