Gas Shortage Due to Closure of Strait of Hormuz; Pakistan’s Situation Better Than Other Countries: Awais Leghari
Islamabad (Farzana Chaudhry) — Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has apologised to the nation for load shedding during peak hours, stating that the situation is temporary and electricity supply will improve from tonight.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the minister explained that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and regional tensions have disrupted the supply of imported LNG, making it impossible to generate electricity from gas during peak demand. There is currently a shortfall of approximately 4,000 MW, including 1,600 MW from reduced hydel generation and around 3,000 MW due to non-availability of LNG.
Awais Leghari said:
“We apologise to the public for the load shedding during peak hours. We have always brought Pakistan out of darkness. This load shedding is only during peak hours because we cannot produce electricity from gas at peak time. There is no load shedding during daytime.”
He added that load shedding is being carried out uniformly in rural and urban areas, except in K-Electric and Hyderabad regions. K-Electric is receiving a record 2,100 MW from the national grid. Furnace oil is being used to generate 1,440 MW, and maximum possible generation is being ensured.
The minister stressed that Pakistan’s situation is better compared to other countries. Most power plants are operational, with only the gas shortage being the issue. He assured that once LNG arrives and hydel generation increases, load shedding will end soon.
He urged citizens to ignore irresponsible statements on social media and highlighted the government’s efforts to promote renewable energy sources like solar.
