Islamabad,In a landmark decision, the Pakistani government has officially ended the provision of free electricity units for employees of the power sector. The move follows the Lahore High Court’s acceptance of a petition filed by the Power Division.
Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari welcomed the court’s ruling in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Alhamdulillah, for the first time in Pakistan’s history, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, free electricity units for power sector employees have been abolished.”
The minister described the abolition as the fulfillment of one of the public’s oldest and longest-standing demands. He added that “Allah has granted this government the honour of fulfilling this demand” and vowed that the government would continue to take every step necessary for the betterment of the country and its people.
The decision is being hailed as a significant reform in the energy sector aimed at promoting fairness, reducing fiscal burdens, and addressing public grievances over subsidized benefits amid rising electricity costs for ordinary consumers. The facility had been a subject of controversy for years, with critics arguing it contributed to inefficiencies in the power sector.
This development comes as part of broader efforts by the Shehbaz Sharif-led government to bring structural reforms and financial discipline to Pakistan’s power sector.
