LAHORE: Vice Chancellor of University of the Punjab, Prof Dr Muhammad Ali, has emphasized that student societies focused on character-building play a vital role in nurturing moral values alongside academic learning.
He expressed these views while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the Character Building Society (CBS) at the Institute of Zoology, held at the Zoological Museum, New Campus. The event was attended by Director Institute of Zoology Prof Dr Nabila Roohi, Director Student Affairs Dr Shahzeb Khan, CBS-IOZ Coordinator Dr Bushra Nisar Khan, faculty members, and a large number of students.
In his address, Prof Dr Muhammad Ali stated that education is not limited to acquiring knowledge but also involves developing honesty, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility. He noted that such societies help students cultivate leadership qualities, teamwork, and mutual respect.
He further said that these platforms guide young people away from negative influences by promoting positive activities such as community service and ethical discussions. “Strong character is the foundation of a successful life and a progressive society,” he remarked, adding that universities must actively support such initiatives to produce responsible and principled citizens.
The Vice Chancellor also administered the oath to newly inducted members, who pledged to uphold the values and principles of the Character Building Society and work with dedication to promote integrity and transparency.
A poster competition was also organized during the event, providing students with an opportunity to express their creativity on important social and ethical themes. Winners were awarded prizes in recognition of their performance.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Nabila Roohi said that the Character Building Society serves as a platform for students to develop moral values, leadership skills, and a commitment to a corruption-free society. She added that the society plans to organize seminars, awareness campaigns, and community outreach programs throughout the academic year.
The Character Building Societies (CBS) initiative, launched annually by the National Accountability Bureau, aims to promote integrity and transparency, combat corruption, and empower youth through active citizenship and social responsibility.
