LAHORE: Professor Emeritus Dr Masood Rabbani (Izaz-i-Fazeelat) has assumed charge as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore following his appointment by the Governor Punjab/Chancellor for a period of four years.
Prof Dr Masood Rabbani is a renowned international scientist and microbiologist, and a senior Emeritus Professor at UVAS. He has previously served as President of the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC), Convener of PVMC Accreditation & Equivalence, and Convener of the National Curricula Revision Committee. He also held key positions as caretaker Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor of UVAS.
He holds a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Dr Rabbani is the recipient of the prestigious Izaz-i-Fazeelat Presidential Award (2005) in recognition of his academic excellence. He was awarded a fellowship from the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles, USA, in 2008, and received the Best Teacher Award (2013–14) from the Higher Education Commission Pakistan.
An HEC-approved PhD supervisor, Prof Rabbani has supervised over 100 PhD and MPhil scholars and authored more than 200 impact-factor research publications along with several books. His research primarily focuses on biosafety, food safety, and implementation of ISO standards, alongside diagnosis and control of major livestock, poultry, and pet diseases prevalent in Punjab.
With over 40 years of professional experience in education, research, and implementation of ISO standards, he played a key role in achieving international accreditation for the University Diagnostic Lab through ISO 17025 certification by PNAC in 2010.
After assuming office, the Vice-Chancellor stated that his top priorities include enhancing the quality of education and applied research for end-user benefit, increasing university income, strengthening linkages with industry as well as national and international institutions, and promoting capacity building for students and faculty. He also emphasized entrepreneurship, innovation, improvement in diagnostic and health services, food safety and quality, One Health initiatives, and smart livestock farming to support the poor livestock farming community.
