WASHINGTON / BERLIN — US President Donald Trump sharply criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday, telling him to focus on ending the Russia-Ukraine war instead of interfering in America’s nuclear diplomacy with Iran. Trump issued the rebuke on social media, warning European leaders not to undermine ongoing US-Iran negotiations.
The spat was triggered after Chancellor Merz publicly stated that Iranian officials were “humiliating” the United States in the nuclear talks, suggesting the negotiations were going nowhere. Trump fired back, dismissing the remarks as unwanted interference.
“Germany should focus on stopping the war in Ukraine rather than commenting on negotiations they are not part of,” Trump said. The US president stressed that America is engaged in serious diplomacy with Tehran and called on European allies to refrain from making statements that could derail the sensitive process.
The exchange highlights growing tensions between Washington and Berlin over foreign policy priorities, as Trump pushes for a diplomatic resolution with Iran while simultaneously pressing European nations to do more on the Ukraine front.
