Washington — US President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will impose a 25 percent tariff on cars and trucks imported from the European Union, escalating trade tensions between Washington and Brussels.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the EU has failed to honor agreed-upon trade commitments, and that the new tariffs will take effect next week.
“The European Union has not been living up to the terms of our trade deal,” Trump wrote, adding that the increased duties would apply to all automobiles and trucks arriving from EU member states.
However, Trump offered an exemption: EU automakers who manufacture their vehicles on American soil would face no tariffs. “If they build their cars and trucks in the USA, there will be no tariff — none,” he stated.
The announcement sent shockwaves through European automotive markets, with major manufacturers including Germany’s BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen potentially facing significant cost increases on US-bound exports. The EU has yet to issue an official response, though retaliatory measures are widely expected.
The move marks the latest flashpoint in an ongoing trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies, raising fresh concerns among global investors about the future of transatlantic commerce.
