LAHORE: Provincial Minister for Health and Emergency Services Khawaja Salman Rafique stressed the need for strict implementation of fire safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) in commercial buildings, warning that legal action will be taken against violators.
He was addressing a ceremony held at the Rescue Headquarters in connection with International Firefighters Day 2026, where he attended as chief guest. Parliamentary Secretary Syed Ziaullah Shah and Secretary Emergency Services Punjab Dr Rizwan Naseer were also present, along with a large number of rescue officials and personnel.
The ceremony began with prayers for firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. Khawaja Salman Rafique paid tribute to the martyred rescuers, acknowledging their sacrifices in protecting lives and property.
Addressing participants, he said that the rescue service has become a model institution for the entire country, adding that rescuers have saved citizens from losses worth Rs786 billion through their dedicated efforts. He credited the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for strengthening the emergency services, including increasing the number of ambulances and introducing air ambulance services that have saved hundreds of lives.
The minister emphasized that strict enforcement of fire safety SOPs in commercial buildings is essential, warning that no one will be allowed to violate the law. He added that further improvements, including navigation systems and emergency preparedness measures, are being completed.
Speaking on the occasion, Syed Ziaullah Shah said that rescue operations require teamwork and praised rescuers for their dedication, especially during flood emergencies. He termed the martyrs of the department a source of pride.
Dr Rizwan Naseer highlighted the challenging responsibilities of firefighters, stressing the importance of implementing fire safety measures, particularly in high-rise buildings. He noted that Rescue 1122 personnel have rendered remarkable services during disasters, including floods, often risking their lives to save others.
At the end of the ceremony, Khawaja Salman Rafique, along with Syed Ziaullah Shah and Dr Rizwan Naseer, distributed Best Performance Awards for 2025, including cash prizes, shields, and certificates among outstanding firefighters and rescue personnel at divisional levels.
