Washington: Russia is shipping drone components and military equipment to Iran through the Caspian Sea, according to a report by The New York Times, citing US officials.
The supply route is helping Iran rebuild its military capabilities following recent strikes by the United States and Israel. According to the report, approximately 60 percent of Iran’s drone stockpile was depleted during the conflict, but Russian deliveries could allow Tehran to rapidly restore its arsenal.
The Caspian Sea serves as a strategic corridor between the two countries, which share no land border but have extensive coastlines along the landlocked body of water. US officials say the route allows both nations to conduct trade while circumventing Western sanctions. Russia is now reportedly rerouting shipments through the Caspian that previously traveled via the Strait of Hormuz.
