WASHINGTON / WARSAW — The United States has suspended plans to deploy troops to Poland following President Donald Trump’s order to withdraw 5,000 American soldiers from Germany — a move that has triggered rare bipartisan criticism in Congress and deepened anxiety among NATO allies.
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have spoken out against the administration’s decision, warning that scaling back US military presence in Europe undermines collective defence commitments and sends a dangerous signal to Moscow at a time of heightened regional tensions.
Poland, which shares a border with Ukraine and has been a staunch advocate for a strong NATO eastern flank, views American troop deployments as critical to its national security. Warsaw has expressed serious concern over the latest development.
The decisions mark a significant shift in US strategic posture in Europe and raise fresh questions about Washington’s long-term commitment to its NATO obligations. European defence ministers are expected to raise the matter at the next alliance meeting.
