Tehran: Twenty Iranian sailors released from United States custody have safely returned to their homeland following a multi-leg journey that took them through Singapore and Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, before their final arrival in Iran.
According to sources, upon their release the sailors were first transported from Singapore to Islamabad, where Pakistani authorities facilitated their transit and handover to Iranian officials. Within hours of departing Islamabad, all twenty sailors arrived safely on Iranian soil, bringing an end to what had been a prolonged period of detention under American custody.
Pakistan played a notable facilitative role in the repatriation process, underscoring Islamabad’s quiet but significant diplomatic engagement in regional affairs involving Iran and the broader international community.
The release of the sailors is being viewed as a meaningful diplomatic development amid the persistently tense relationship between Tehran and Washington. While the two countries remain at odds over a range of issues including Iran’s nuclear programme and regional influence, the repatriation signals a degree of back-channel engagement and humanitarian accommodation between the two sides.
Iranian state media gave prominent coverage to the sailors’ homecoming, with Tehran characterising the development as a diplomatic success. Families of the released sailors expressed relief and joy at their safe return after what had been an anxious period of uncertainty.
Analysts note that while the episode may not represent a broader thaw in US-Iran relations, it does reflect the continued existence of indirect communication channels that both sides appear willing to utilise when circumstances warrant.
