New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked Eid al-Adha with a message of solidarity, sacrifice, and economic justice at a festive gathering in the Bronx — but it was his wardrobe choice that caught the internet’s attention. The mayor, a lifelong Arsenal fan, arrived wearing an Emirates-branded kurta in colours closely resembling the Premier League champions’ away kit.
Mamdani attended the celebration alongside fellow Democratic Socialist and congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, where he drew a powerful parallel between the spirit of Eid al-Adha and the everyday struggles of New Yorkers facing rising costs.
“We are all working together to make sure every New Yorker can afford their basic needs — food, housing, and childcare,” he told the crowd.
In a social media post marking the occasion, Mamdani wrote:
“Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden but an opportunity — to see ourselves as part of something larger and to help those who need it most.”
Mamdani, a progressive Democrat who assumed office earlier this year, expressed pride in being New York City’s first Muslim mayor and pledged to lead through unity. He closed his message with a rallying call to the city’s diverse communities: “Our solidarity is our strength. Eid Mubarak, New York!”
The mayor’s choice of the Arsenal-coloured kurta — a nod to his well-known passion for the North London club — quickly became a talking point on social media, adding a lighter touch to an otherwise heartfelt occasion.
