WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has circulated a draft agreement with Iran to Israel and other allied countries, Britain’s Guardian newspaper reported Friday, signaling a potential diplomatic breakthrough in the long-running standoff over Iran’s nuclear programme.
According to the report, the draft includes provisions for opening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the American blockade. Under the proposed memorandum of understanding, Iran would also regain access to approximately $12 billion in frozen assets currently held abroad.
The draft further proposes that the Strait of Hormuz be restored to its pre-war status within 30 days of any agreement taking effect.
Meanwhile, China has indicated it wants the United Nations to serve as the final guarantor of any such deal — a condition that could add an additional layer of multilateral oversight to what would be one of the most consequential diplomatic agreements of Trump’s second term.
The Guardian’s report comes amid ongoing back-channel negotiations between Washington and Tehran, with world powers closely watching for signs of a formal deal.
