Kabul, May 31, 2026 — At least 18 Afghan nationals — including 10 children and 5 women — were killed and 29 others injured when an overloaded truck carrying families returning from Pakistan overturned in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday.
The accident occurred on the highway between Jalalabad and the capital Kabul, in Laghman province. Abdul Malik Niazi, spokesman for the provincial governor, confirmed the death toll and said the victims were Afghan families who had been repatriated or deported from Pakistan.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The tragedy comes amid a broader wave of Afghan deportations from Pakistan, raising urgent questions about the safety and dignity of those being forced to return under difficult conditions.
