LAHORE: Punjab’s largest-ever sewerage cleaning and desilting campaign has achieved 95 percent of its targets, with authorities intensifying efforts to complete the remaining work before the onset of the monsoon season.
The province-wide initiative was launched on the directives of to improve urban drainage infrastructure and reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
During a visit to review ongoing desilting operations in Lahore, Secretary Housing Punjab received a briefing from on the progress of the campaign. Additional DG Operations Sohail Qadir Cheema and Managing Director WASA Lahore Ghufran Ahmed were also present.
Officials informed the Secretary that a simultaneous sewerage cleaning and desilting drive had been launched across all 41 districts of Punjab on the instructions of the Chief Minister. The campaign has already delivered encouraging results, significantly improving the efficiency of drainage systems in multiple cities.
Noor-ul-Amin Mengal praised the performance of WASA management and field teams for achieving key targets ahead of schedule. He directed officials to maintain the current pace of operations over the next two weeks to ensure the completion of all remaining work before the arrival of monsoon rains.
He instructed officers to remain actively engaged in field operations, personally supervise ongoing activities, and ensure that all available machinery remains fully functional to strengthen drainage infrastructure across the province.
The Secretary Housing described the initiative as the first campaign of its kind in Punjab’s history, noting that its primary objective is to protect citizens from monsoon-related hardships and minimize the threat of urban flooding.
He also appealed to the public to support the effort by avoiding the disposal of garbage into sewer lines and drains, warning that solid waste severely hampers the performance of drainage systems. Citizens, he said, have an important role to play in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
Furthermore, he directed authorities to ensure the prompt resolution of public complaints related to sewerage services and emphasized that delays in addressing citizens’ concerns would not be tolerated. An efficient and integrated drainage network, he added, is essential for ensuring a safe, clean, and healthy urban environment.
Noor-ul-Amin Mengal reiterated that strict monitoring of the campaign is continuing under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and that all relevant departments remain committed to achieving the remaining targets before the monsoon season begins.
