Beijing strengthens Pyongyang ties amid shifting global alliances
BEIJING/PYONGYANG — Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in North Korea for a landmark state visit, his first trip to Pyongyang in seven years and a move widely seen as a strategic signal to Washington and the West.
The visit marks Xi’s first overseas trip of the year, coming on the heels of high-profile summits with both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin — underscoring China’s pivotal role in global diplomacy.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to receive Xi with full state honours. Analysts say the visit is aimed at deepening economic and political ties between the two neighbouring allies, and reinforcing a united front against Western pressure.
The trip comes at a time of heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with nuclear talks between Pyongyang and Washington long stalled.
