ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level review meeting on the privatisation of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), directing authorities to accelerate the privatisation process. He reaffirmed that the privatisation of loss-making state-owned enterprises remains the government’s top priority.
The Prime Minister stressed that the entire privatisation process must be carried out with full transparency and called for the establishment of a robust regulatory framework following the transfer of DISCOs to the private sector.
The meeting was briefed that in the first phase, three DISCOs — Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) — will be privatised. Expressions of Interest have already been published in national and international newspapers, and the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation has approved the transaction structure for all three companies.
Road shows are being launched this month to attract investors, including international road shows targeting investors from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and China.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers for Law, Finance, Economic Affairs, and Power Division, PM’s Adviser on Privatisation Muhammad Ali, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, and senior government officials.
