WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has claimed that a nuclear deal with Iran could be finalized within the next two to three days, signaling a possible breakthrough in months of diplomatic tensions. Speaking to reporters in New York, Trump said both Israel and Iran have agreed to halt military operations against each other for at least one week, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened immediately upon signing of any agreement.
“We are in the final stages of a very good deal — one that will never allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon,” Trump said before boarding Air Force One. He added that Iranian negotiators have shown willingness to meet all terms, and that Tehran had sent messages indicating it was prepared to cease hostilities if Israel stood down first.
In an interview with Axios, Trump revealed that five regional countries had urged him to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against further escalation. Trump disclosed that he had warned Netanyahu directly that Israel could find itself standing alone if it continued to escalate against Iran. He also confirmed that Washington was notified only at the last minute about recent Israeli strikes on Iran.
Speaking to Israel’s Channel 12, Trump said he had personally urged Netanyahu not to retaliate against Iranian ballistic missile attacks. According to US officials, Trump successfully convinced Israel to delay its response by several days in order to protect ongoing nuclear negotiations with Tehran.
