Islamabad / Dubai — Pakistan’s National Assembly has been informed that the United Arab Emirates deported approximately 3,500 Pakistani citizens for violating the country’s strict social media laws during the period of heightened Iran-US tensions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the deportations, adding that the properties and assets of the expelled individuals are being transferred to their legal heirs. The ministry urged affected families facing difficulties in asset recovery to come forward, assuring full diplomatic and legal assistance.
The UAE enforces stringent cybercrime and social media regulations under its Federal Decree-Law on Combating Cybercrimes, which prohibits content deemed harmful to national security, public order, or friendly foreign nations. Violations can result in immediate deportation, imprisonment, and heavy fines.
The development has raised concerns among Pakistan’s overseas community, particularly in the Gulf, where an estimated 1.6 million Pakistanis reside in the UAE alone.
