TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have announced that the funeral rites for the country’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will begin on July 4, with burial taking place on July 9 near the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad, in accordance with his will. According to state media, the six-day mourning period will start in Tehran with a public gathering, followed by a ceremony in Qom on July 7, before the burial in Mashhad.
Ayatollah Khamenei served as Iran’s Supreme Leader for nearly 37 years and was killed on February 28 in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on his office and residence in Tehran. His son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who was also wounded in the strike, has been appointed as the new Supreme Leader.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he expects a major agreement with Iran to be finalized by the weekend or Monday, under which Iran would abandon efforts to acquire nuclear weapons and keep the Strait of Hormuz open to trade. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also stated the peace deal is “closer than ever,” with significant progress expected soon. The Iranian government has neither confirmed nor denied these claims.
