Former U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected India’s proposal to reduce import tariffs on American goods to zero, saying the offer came too late.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said that trade relations between Washington and New Delhi have long been “one-sided.” He argued that while India sells large volumes of products to the United States, American companies face heavy barriers in the Indian market.
“India has imposed the highest tariffs of any country on us, making it nearly impossible for our companies to sell there,” Trump wrote. “Meanwhile, they buy very little oil and military equipment from the United States, but purchase far more from Russia.”
Trump said India’s recent proposal to eliminate tariffs should have been made “years ago” and dismissed it as insufficient at this stage.
The remarks come as U.S.-India trade ties remain a focal point in global economic and strategic relations.
