TEHRAN — The Iranian government has announced a three-day national holiday following the passing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, as the country prepares for an unprecedented state funeral.
According to official sources, funeral prayers will be held on July 4th and 5th at the Grand Musalla of Tehran, one of the largest prayer grounds in the world, where millions of mourners are expected to gather from across Iran and beyond.
The burial ceremony is scheduled for July 6th, with the capital Tehran observing a three-day public holiday as a mark of national mourning. State flags have been lowered to half-mast across government buildings throughout the country.
Khamenei, who served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, was one of the longest-serving heads of state in the world. His passing marks a defining moment in Iran’s political and religious history. The Assembly of Experts is expected to convene shortly to elect a new Supreme Leader in accordance with Iran’s constitution.
World leaders and governments across the Muslim world have begun offering condolences, as global attention turns to Tehran amid uncertainty over Iran’s political transition.
