Cutting-Edge Research and Novel Therapies Improving Patient Outcomes, Says Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal

LAHORE: Lahore General Hospital (LGH), in collaboration with the Pakistan Association of Dermatologists, organized a symposium titled “New Horizons in the Management of Atopic Dermatitis: Expanding the Spectrum of Available Therapies,” bringing together leading dermatologists, researchers, postgraduate trainees, and medical students to discuss the latest advances in the treatment of chronic skin diseases.

Addressing the symposium, Principal Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal said that rapid progress in medical research and the introduction of innovative pharmacological therapies are transforming the management of dermatological disorders, enabling patients to benefit from more effective and advanced treatment options.

He noted that in complex and chronic conditions such as atopic dermatitis, modern therapeutic approaches and biological agents are opening new avenues of hope for patients. He emphasized that healthcare professionals must remain updated with the latest scientific developments and research to ensure the delivery of high-quality medical care.

The symposium was organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Atif Shahzad, Head of the Department of Dermatology at LGH. Among those in attendance were Medical Superintendent Prof. Dr. Faryad Hussain, Prof. Tariq Rashid, Prof. Ijaz Hussain, Prof. Faria Asad, Dr. Tahir Kamal, Dr. Wajiha Saeed, Dr. Sadia Siddiqui, Dr. Ayma Shaheen, Dr. Samreen Rafi, Dr. Sana Mozammil, Dr. Ahmad Kazmi, Dr. Hina Manzoor, Dr. Nida Ellie, Dr. Muhammad Urooj, along with a large number of consultants, postgraduate trainees, and medical students.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal highlighted that promoting medical research, professional training, and continuing medical education has become essential in today’s healthcare environment. He said such academic activities expose young physicians to emerging medical trends, strengthen their clinical expertise, and contribute significantly to continuous professional development. He also congratulated the organizers for successfully conducting the symposium.

During the scientific sessions, experts presented and discussed the latest therapeutic strategies for atopic dermatitis, including novel pharmacological treatments, biological therapies, and evidence-based approaches to patient care. Participants agreed that early diagnosis, timely treatment, and regular follow-up are critical to reducing the long-term complications and disease burden associated with the condition.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Atif Shahzad described atopic dermatitis as a chronic inflammatory skin disease that significantly affects both the physical and psychological well-being of patients. He said continued advances in scientific research and modern pharmacotherapy have considerably expanded the treatment options available for managing the disease.

The symposium concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage with experts on clinical and research-related issues. Dr. Sadia Siddiqui thanked the speakers and attendees and reaffirmed LGH’s commitment to organizing similar academic programs in the future to promote medical research, professional training, and excellence in patient care.
