Accurate ECG Diagnosis in Emergencies Is Key to Saving Lives: Principal AMC

LAHORE: Lahore General Hospital (LGH) organized a one-day training workshop titled “ECG Diagnosis in Acute Medicine and ICU” at Medical Unit-III to enhance the diagnostic skills of young doctors, postgraduate trainees, and medical students in managing cardiac emergencies.

Addressing the inaugural session, Principal Ameer-ud-Din Medical College (AMC), Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal, said that the growing number of cardiac patients in Pakistan has made modern training for young doctors an urgent necessity. He emphasized that prompt and accurate ECG diagnosis in the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) enables timely treatment and plays a decisive role in saving patients’ lives during critical situations.

He added that although advances in medical research have significantly improved treatment options, successful patient outcomes still depend on the professional competence and clinical judgment of physicians.

During the workshop, Prof. Dr. Khurram Saleem conducted practical sessions in line with international clinical guidelines. Participants received hands-on training in the early identification of acute coronary syndrome, life-threatening arrhythmias, electrolyte imbalances, cardiac changes in ICU patients, and accurate ECG interpretation.

Assistant Professor of Medicine Dr. Muhammad Maqsood highlighted that physicians working in Emergency Departments and ICUs must have a strong command of ECG interpretation, as every second can make the difference between life and death in emergency situations.

The workshop was attended by postgraduate trainees, young doctors, and medical students, including Dr. Umar Ijaz, Dr. Sabira Sharif, Dr. Qurat-ul-Ain, and Dr. Laiq-ur-Rehman. Participants practiced diagnostic decision-making and emergency treatment through clinical case discussions and sample ECG reports.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the organizers thanked the experts for sharing their knowledge and reaffirmed their commitment to organizing similar training programmes in the future to further strengthen the clinical skills of healthcare professionals.
