LAHORE: Ameer-ud-Din Medical College (AMC) has become the first public-sector medical institution in Pakistan to introduce virtual body dissection, marking a major advancement in medical education and bringing anatomy training closer to international standards.
A state-of-the-art digital anatomy system worth Rs15 million has been inaugurated at AMC with the support of philanthropists. The advanced facility will enable medical students to receive practical training in the structure and functions of human organs, as well as complex anatomical procedures, through an interactive digital platform.
The new laboratory was formally inaugurated by Principal Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) and Lahore General Hospital (LGH), Prof. Dr Farooq Afzal.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Dr Farooq Afzal said the modern digital anatomy system had been provided through the educational and research support of philanthropists. He appreciated their contribution towards strengthening medical education and research facilities at the institution.
Prof. Atiya Mubarak, Prof. Tasleem Raza, Professor Shaista Farooq, Prof. Fauzia Farzana, Prof. Muniza Saeed, MS Prof. Faryad Hussain, Prof. Kanwal Saeed, Dr Shaista Mubeen, Dr Shagufta Nasreen, Prof. Tayyaba Gul Malik, Prof. Farhan Rashid, Dr Abdul Aziz and Dr Himna Ansari were among those present at the ceremony, along with other doctors and students.
Prof. Dr Farooq Afzal said the newly introduced technology is a life-size, touch-enabled 3D virtual representation of the human body. It allows students to digitally dissect different parts of the body, enlarge anatomical structures and rotate them through 360 degrees for detailed examination.
He said the technology would enable students to study the human body in a safe and controlled environment without relying solely on traditional chemicals or actual human cadavers.
The principal said every possible measure was being taken to provide students with modern education and practical training in accordance with contemporary medical requirements.
He added that the facility would allow students to develop their practical understanding and skills before treating real patients or participating in surgical procedures. Such training, he said, would help enhance their professional expertise, confidence and clinical competence.
Prof. Dr Farooq Afzal also praised the philanthropists for supporting the initiative, saying that such contributions would help raise the standards of medical education and research while also contributing to improved patient-care facilities at LGH.
He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing students with international-standard educational and research facilities and said AMC and LGH would continue focusing on quality medical education, research and patient-friendly healthcare policies.
