Iran, Oman Agree on Temporary Route Through Strait of Hormuz; Full Reopening Tied to US Commitments

TEHRAN/MUSCAT: Iran and Oman have agreed on a new temporary route for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, though Iran has made clear that a decision on fully reopening the critical waterway has not yet been made.
According to Al Jazeera, a senior Iranian official said the temporary route was finalized following talks between Iran and Oman, aimed at enabling limited maritime traffic under current circumstances.
The official said full restoration of normal traffic through the Strait of Hormuz will not happen until the United States fulfills its obligations under the interim peace agreement reached in June. Iran maintains that Washington must implement the commitments made under that deal before progress can be made toward fully reopening the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints, through which a large share of oil and energy products from the Persian Gulf reach global markets. Any disruption to this route can significantly affect global oil prices, energy supplies, and international trade.
