Bayern Munich Striker Becomes First English Player to Win the Prestigious Honour
London: England and Bayern Munich star striker Harry Kane has made history by winning Germany’s Footballer of the Year award, becoming the first English player ever to receive the prestigious honour.
Kane collected the award at the Allianz Arena ahead of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga season opener, saying it was an immense source of joy to receive the accolade in front of the club’s supporters. He was named Germany’s Footballer of the Year following an outstanding 2025-26 season with Bayern Munich. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was named Coach of the Year, while Giulia Gwinn won the Footballer of the Year award in the women’s category.
Writing on X, Kane said: “Becoming the first English player to win Germany’s Footballer of the Year award is a real honour for me. Receiving it at the Allianz Arena in front of our amazing fans is a special feeling. Delighted to share this with the coach and Giulia Gwinn — congratulations to you both!”
Despite winning several awards during his time at Bayern Munich, this marks the first occasion Kane has been named Germany’s Footballer of the Year. He succeeded Florian Wirtz, who had won the award in 2025. Kane received 272 of 659 votes cast by members of the German Sports Journalists’ Association (VDS), finishing clearly in first place. Michael Olise came second with 203 votes — the second consecutive year Olise has finished runner-up.
This is Kane’s third major honour in a short span. Earlier this week, he also won the European Golden Shoe. Kane scored 36 goals in the Bundesliga last season, making him Europe’s top scorer for the 2025-26 campaign. He then helped Bayern Munich win the 2026 Franz Beckenbauer Supercup; Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Saturday, though Kane himself did not find the net in that match.
