Turkey has launched a nationwide campaign in support of children’s rights in Gaza, titled “Don’t Shoot Down the Kites, Leave the Sky for the Children.” Initiated by Turkey’s Ministry of National Education, the emotionally powerful campaign will run from September 14 to 18 across all 81 provinces of the country, aiming to draw global attention to the restrictions imposed on kite-flying in Gaza and to defend children’s fundamental rights.
Under the campaign, students will design kites together with their parents and inscribe them with messages of peace, education and safety. The colorful kites will carry the voices of thousands of Turkish children into the sky, presenting a living scene of hope and protest. Each kite will serve as a messenger, calling for an end to violence and the restoration of childhood freedoms in war-torn areas.
The campaign is being run under the broader framework of the “Turkish Century Education Model,” which integrates education with ethical and humanitarian values. Through it, organizers aim to foster empathy, global awareness and a deep sense of justice among children, encouraging them to look beyond borders and recognize their shared humanity with peers living under siege and occupation. Alongside creating art, students will also take part in discussions on children’s rights, war, and the importance of safe spaces for play and learning.
The Ministry stressed that the sky belongs to all children, and no child should be denied the simple joy of flying a kite. As these kites soar over Turkey’s cities and villages, they will carry a clear and urgent message to the world: childhood must be protected, and the sky must remain a realm of freedom, free from fear. Turkey stands with the children of Gaza, and through this campaign, their dreams are being lifted higher than the clouds.
