US President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that the war between the United States and Iran would end shortly after the November 3 midterm elections, arguing Tehran can no longer sustain resistance. Speaking to reporters before departing for Dallas for the Republican Party’s midterm convention, Trump accused Iran of making a “desperate attempt to influence the election.” He ruled out an immediate return to nuclear negotiations, though he did not close the door on future talks.
Trump asserted that Washington now controls the Strait of Hormuz and intends to rename it the “Trump Strait,” predicting oil prices would fall once the conflict ends. He described Iran — after “51 years as the bully of the Middle East” — as now “crumbling,” and warned the US could strike Iran’s “Pix Mountain” facility over alleged activity there. He claimed recent US strikes had already disabled nine Iranian tankers.
Separately, Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed claims that outside actors are helping shift the balance of the conflict in Iran’s favor, saying Iran would face consequences for attacks on US vessels. He cited damage to five tankers overnight as a direct response to strikes on American ships, and confirmed the US intends to maintain economic pressure on Iran going forward.
